Announcing another Zentangle®-original tangle, “a fun new tangle that’s a bit different because the entire tangle component (we’re calling it a ‘pod’ for now) is completed in one continuous stroke. ”
Zentangle originators Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts just posted this video of their latest pattern Mooka, inspired by the art of Alphonse Maria Mucha.
Enjoy!!
Rick and Maria also posted Maria’s step-by-step instructions for drawing the Mooka tangle in their latest newsletter here. The examples they demonstrate are in their post here. The example on the right is the one I first posted on the site but I’ve recently decided a more traditional example was called for.

Oh – how – lovely !!!!! Thanks alot!!!
OMG!! I have always loved the art deco look and this looks so fun, yet so elegant!
Thanks for showing the video!!
This is such a lovely pattern and I love watching Maria’s penmanship.
For those wondering about it, I believe the pen she opens the video with is known as a calligrapher’s oblique pen, used for Copperplate scripts. You can see it up close here: http://www.paperpenalia.com/flex2.html.
You can find the Speedball set on Amazon – Speedball Oblique Pen Set
.
Maria’s years and years of calligraphy experience really shines, doesn’t it? You won’t find that on Amazon!
Hi Linda, Rick & Maria et al 🙂
I was away for a while, and returned home to this gorgeous, gorgeous Mooka/Mucha design – it’s a totally devine Tangle. Thank you so much for posting this video here for us all to see. Makes you want to get stuck right in doesn’t it :-)?!!
ta-ra for now,

‘Mooka’ will truly be one of my favorite patterns. Beautiful and so adaptable! Why don’t you call the pattern segments ‘zegments’?
This is just gorgeous….I can’t wait to try it. Love it.
I’ve always loved the botanical, tangly look of ‘art nouveau’. And I really like your version for the label Linda!
–Margaret
This is one of my favorites! Whenever I’m not sure what to Tangle- I choose this one.
This is beautiful–you too/two are beautiful! This was so fun to watch! Thanks for sharing you talent with us. This is going to bring a lot of pleasure to me!
WOW…. I have just discovered this…..I am starting to decorate gourds with pyrography. I can’t wait to try this on one…Thanks for sharing….Judy
What was that beautiful bent nib fountain pen?!
Hi Heather, I believe you’re referring to the calligrapher’s oblique pointed pen?
Where did the name mooka come from?
The answer can be found by reading the post 🙂
I’m new to Zentangle and my sister recently gave me some tiles and sketch paper. I just signed up for this site and am so excited to learn new tangles. This one is very unique and I think I need to practice lots. Me and my pen are still timid – lol. Thanks for the video.
I just saw the video of Maria doing Simplified Mooka! Wow! I love watching Maria tangle – it’s so natural and beautiful. Thank you so much for posting this!
