How to draw AYDEE

Zentangle pattern: Aydee. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. It has been a good long while since we’ve had a new tangle from Düsseldorf-based tangler Indrani Novello to explore but today she’s back with her Aydee tangle.

Aydee is Indrani’s sixth tangle on the site.

As happens with all of us, sometimes life gets in the way. In Indrani’s case she writes that work kept her from deconstructing new tangles for a while,

I didn’t have much energy to spare for thinking up new tangles, but things have settled down to a more relaxed pace.

I named my latest ribbon-style tangle Aydee, because I thought it had a bit of an Art Deco-like vibe.

Like Amun and to some extent No-No, it came about by playing with zigzags and triangles.

It works nicely both as a single ribbon as well as back to back.

It can be varied by changing the slant and lengths of the zigzags.

Indrani features ribbons of Aydee in a tile with CZT Margaret Bremner’s Copada in the center and the Zentangle®-original Zander tangle floating behind both.

Aydee uses lots of alternating auras to produce a woven effect. For my example I also chose to tangle a back-to-back version of Indrani’s Aydee and I deliberately went a bit further in Step 5, inking in each triangle. Usually the “technique” of placing ribbon-style tangles in rows or columns back-to-back produces quite striking designs and variations.

Indrani illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Aydee below and includes it in a Renaissance tile with CZT Sandy Bartholomew’s Hemp and some of the Zentangle-original Umble.
