Hurricane Hermine, the first hurricane to hit the state of Florida in 11 years (Hurricane Wilma, October 24, 2005), came ashore just east of Tallahassee in the Panhandle area of Florida around 2 AM today.
As yet I haven’t seen much in the way of reports other than much of Tallahassee, our state capital, is without power. The biggest fears were storm surge damage all along the northwest coastline where waters are shallow along the Gulf and surge damage can occur miles inland. Yesterday rising waters were reported as far south as Sarasota on the west coast.
Now a tropical storm and “done” with Florida, Hermine is continuing its path northeast currently headed towards Savannah GA and the US eastern coastline north of there.

According to my local paper, The Palm Beach Post, it’s been almost 4,000 days since Wilma and we’ve been so very lucky. As I mentioned last week, Labor Day is the height of our hurricane season and Labor Day weekend storms have always done plenty of damage in the past.
It’s no coincidence the University of Miami’s sports teams are named the Hurricanes (“Canes”), they fly hurricane warning flags (two storm warning flags together), and Sebastian the Ibis is the school’s mascot.
“Miami adopted a native marsh bird called the Ibis as the official mascot in 1926. The Ibis is known for its bravery as a hurricane approaches. Folklore maintains that other birds look to the Ibis for leadership. The Ibis uses its instinct to detect danger. It is the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane hits, giving warning that danger is imminent. As the storm passes the Ibis is the first to reappear, a sign that clear skies are approaching.” ~ Wikipedia. BTW “Ibis” is pronounced “Eye-biss”.

Best of luck through the storm. When power goes out and all seems a bit frightening, try tangling by candlelight. Reports are that it can be just what the doctor (or psychotherapist—or even the electrician) ordered. Be safe.
