How to draw ALIEN CREST

Arlington National CemeteryToday in the U.S. we celebrate Memorial Day to honor and commemorate all the brave American men and women who gave their lives in military service to this country and made it possible for us to enjoy our precious freedom.

As we enjoy time with our families and friends and the traditional beginning of Summer today, let’s pause for a moment and give thanks for those souls and their families, all who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Bless them, and all those who serve.

Zentangle pattern: Alien Crest. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.comToday’s tangle pattern is another cool one from California tangler Gael Shepherd. Not long ago Gael shared her sweet Omen tangle with us.

She sent Alien Crest along with a note saying, “I love using the tangle pattern ‘boomerangs’ and this pattern came to be by my experiments with that pattern.

Four years ago Boomerangs was published on Memorial Day, so I thought it would be cool timing to add Alien Crest today. While it is very similar to Boomerangs it’s got a very different woven result.

For my example I’ve turned Alien Crest “sideways” and added a very light touch of shading to the over-unders.

Here are Gael’s step-by-step instructions for drawing Alien Crest.

For those who’ve asked about Memorial Day vs Veterans Day …

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day
“Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.”

and from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (linked above)
    http://www.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/
“Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.”

I thought Memorial day was to remember everyone who meant something to you. I did not know it was specifically military. Whereas Veterans day was specifically anyone who died in the armed forces.

I’m late discovering alien crest, and boy, is it fun! I love boomerang and use it a good bit. This one looks like it’ll take more concentration — not a bad thing to remember to do — and the woven look adds a whole, new dimension. Thanks, Gael and Linda.
