Tangle Refresher 108 – Featuring Tour de France memories and “Bicycles change lives”

Tangle Refresher!Oh my goodness, where did July go ??!!

On reflection, for me it was in large part enjoyed watching the most exciting Tour de France we’ve seen in many, many years. The Tour is always excellent entertainment but this year with so many top international pro cycling contenders vying for the prized Maillot Jaune, it was one for the ages.

So many memorable highlights, but one that sticks out for me is when Steve Cummings of MTN-Qhubeka, the first African team to ever participate in the Tour in its 100+ year history, won a grueling Stage 14. And magically this stage win came on July 18th on the occasion of Nelson Mandela Day. An amazing moment in time that could not have been scripted better.

Qhubeka is a word from the language of the Nguni people of southern Africa that means “to carry on”, “to progress”, “to move forward”. Qhubeka is a foundation that provides bicycles as a means of transport to underprivileged populations. ~ From BBC Sport

Qhubeka is World Bicycle Relief’s program in South Africa. World Bicycle Relief is a global non-profit organization dedicated to advancing education, health and economic opportunities by providing simple, sustainable transportation.

Since World Bicycle Relief’s founding in 2005, it has delivered more than 220,000 specially designed, locally assembled bicycles to people in need. ~ From Team MTN-Qhubeka’s website

A worthy project indeed.
