How to draw ’NZEPPEL and CRAZY ’NZEPPEL

Variants can include shading and adding solid areas where the spirit takes you.

’Nzeppel is a Zentangle®-original tangle designed by Maria Thomas. The link to her illustrated instructions for drawing ’Nzeppel is here.

My original ’Nzeppel example from 2010

The trick to ’Nzeppel is to draw over (retrace/restate) the original grid lines until you get to the corners when you’re adding the final steps.

Update, June 30, 2010: here’s a new, easier way to draw ’Nzeppel from Zentangle’s newsletter: here. (Tip: it uses a less formal grid.)

Update, September 22, 2017: Sakura and CZT Molly Hollibaugh got together to create this video with Molly demonstrating “Crazy ’Nzeppel” as a promotion for the 12-piece Zentangle Tool Set.

This 12-piece tool set from Sakura and Zentangle contains black Sakura Micron 01, 03, 05, 08 and Graphic 1 pens, a Zentangle pencil, a tortillion, and five original white Zentangle tiles.

UPDATE December 12, 2018 – Project Pack #04. As part of the Twelve Days of Zentangle, 2018 Edition series, in this Day 10 video starting at 12:01 Maria’s daughter and CZT Molly Hollibaugh demonstrates how to tangle ’Nzeppel.

UPDATE June 7, 2019: CZT Margaret Bremner added ’Nzeppel to her “And then some” posts.

I love this one. At first I thought it wasn’t going to work since some comments I’ve read elsewhere made it seem diffcult to draw, but I think it’s actually a very forgiving tangle. At first it may not look like it’s going to come out right, but when it’s completed its overall effect is awesome. It looks very intricate and difficult. My 9 year old couldn’t believe I drew it.

What is a tag and how do I use, them

    • Linda Farmer, CZT

Hi Barbara, tags are a type of keyword that link similar patterns together and also displays other tangles by the same artist. Check out this post for an explanation of how to use tags on the site: How to draw ORGANIC. And do let me know if you have any more questions, I’m happy to clarify 🙂

Really like this one. See it being used as a filler and also the central focus.
