A treat for you today, we have two tangles to explore — it’s a summer double header!
Both are from Spanish tangler Tomàs Padrós who has shared several interesting and unusual tangles with us.
Part of the charm and interest of his new Broadway tangle is in watching your Micron nib as you jog up and across and down while varying the position of the “crossbars” to create a pleasing overall composition.
As for Broadway, Tomàs writes,
… it is based on the graphic resource that consists of crossing a defined direction with a line that passes from one side to the other. This resource is also used by other tangles.
In Rain, for example, triangles are formed on each side of a leader line, and in Organza semicircles are formed on each side.
Broadway shows two essential differences: Triangles and semicircles are not formed but squares or rectangles. Also, the line that defines these forms does not cross a single direction, but it can cross two, three or how many lines you want.
In the deconstructed example below, five lines are shown.
This design has musical and urban resonances, since it can remember a sky line of buildings and a musical notation.
As I am a big fan of the theater, also the musical, I did not hesitate to call it Broadway.
As Tomàs notes, Broadway can be composed of any number of lines in Step 1, I used six for my example and I really like the look of sets of 3 as Tomàs has shown in his example below.
Tomàs illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Broadway below and features it in lively monotangle embellished with a touch of shading and sprinkles of tiny confetti squares.
Tomàs became engrossed in the way this type of tangle develops and coming up shortly is his companion Tektonik tangle which uses this same concept. Stay tuned to your inbox …

Sensational! Add a couple of musical notes on the lines and you’ve got the whole show!
Such a fan of your work Tomas. Thank you for being so generous with your talent.
This looks like written music, which of course is the defining feature of Broadway musicals, and yet it isn’t. Clever! I’m looking forward to drawing this one. 🙂 Thank you Tomàs!
many thanks Tomas! You are an inspiration with your creativity, Hope to try the latest real soon.
Love this Tomas. Another of your ‘out of the box’ creative patterns! Can’t wait to try it!
I love this tangle! Genius!
