Tangle Refresher 162 – Featuring a random string, plus how to draw Aquafleur, Chloe, B-Twixt, Bep, Ando

Irma Status Update … many thanks for all of your good wishes for our safety during this very scary approaching storm. I can’t tell you how comforting it is to know you’re thinking of us all.

Robert and I are now as prepared as we can be and with hurricane shutters in place feel we are in the best place {other than with my family in Canada but that ship has sailed 😉 } to ride this thing out. We have no illusions, we know it’s probably going to be pretty frightening as it passes by us on Sunday afternoon but we’d rather take our chances here at home in the dark behind our hurricane shutters instead of being on the road somewhere stuck in evacuation traffic. We lived through Hurricane Andrew and were part of that evacuation experience way back then so we know what to expect on that score.

So the past few days we have been in alternating states of high anxiety and calm as we’ve been getting our home and ourselves ready and monitoring the every-changing track of this threat. We do find ourselves running around each other in circles trying to remember what we were about to do. It’s amazing how the stress can turn your brain to mush.

At one point we were looking at the eye (the black line on the image below) passing right over our location which I’ve marked with a yellow dot. However in the last 24 hours or so, the storm track has moved further west over the center of the state. According to Robert’s analysis of the “granular data” (thanks Rachel Maddow for that expression) the storm center/eye now looks like it’s coming across Key Largo and into the Everglades.

This might tend to reduce the severity of the impact for us coastal dwellers somewhat as the Everglades absorbs some of its energy, but unfortunately it still means others will experience the brunt we might have had. And we are luckily looking at the effects of a Category 2 or 3 storm in our area. Thankfully not the Category 5 seen throughout the islands.

So come Sunday around 2 pm Eastern we will personally know EXACTLY what we are dealing with and it should pretty much pass by our home within a few hours. Then all of us in the state deal with the after effects and recharge our emotional energy.

But it looks to us like the major population areas of Florida will largely be spared the worst, and thank God for that.

And now for something completely different …

Many tanglers like to use these biweekly Tangle Refreshers as their Zentangle® challenge-of-the-day.

Remember that Zentangle strings are always drawn freehand in pencil so that they magically disappear when you’ve finished tangling the tile.

A string is a simple device to “divide your drawing surface into sections to be filled with tangles“.

In the Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1 there is an entire section devoted to Strings which in part explains:

“As you tangle, your strings disappear as if by magic. This adds to the charm and unified appearance of your completed art. If you had used a pen to draw your string, you would still see the initial sectioning in your completed creation.“

Strings are not intended to be the focal point of your tile.

More String advice from The Book of Zentangle:

“A string is a useful reference, but it is not an impenetrable barrier. Practice going outside your string. It will help increase your ability to think outside the box.“
