Earlier this week you might have noticed a difference in how TanglePatterns.com displays on your smartphone, iPad or Android tablet.
TanglePatterns has always had a mobile version for screens smaller than Desktop or laptop computers. However I set the site up to show the Desktop version to first-time visitors regardless of their device because there are several limitations of the mobile version:
- the scrolling band of tangle images isn’t visible
- the pink alphabetic menu bar to access the list of tangles by letter, Strings, Stories, Tutorials and Videos can’t be displayed
- and none of the features in the sidebars are available. Thus Tangles by Artist, Tangles by Type, and the Random Tangle Selector are missing, as are the form to Subscribe to the TanglePatterns emails and the Google Translator.
Recently Google made changes requiring me to show the Mobile version first when viewed on mobile devices.
So for those who might be confused by the “new” version of TanglePatterns they are seeing, I thought I’d show you how easy it is to switch back and forth on your mobile device whether it’s a smartphone, Android tablet, or iPad, etc. so you still have access to all the great features of the Desktop version as well as the convenience of the streamlined mobile version.
The left side of the image below is the Mobile version of the site, and on the right side (separated by the green bar) is an image of the familiar Desktop version.
In both cases I scrolled all the way down to the bottom of the page on my Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone to take these screen captures. At the bottom of every page on any mobile device you will find these switching buttons/links so you can switch back and forth easily between the version you want to view at any time.
While the mobile version isn’t my favorite way of using the site, it does work for quick reference on mobile devices with small screens. Being able to switch easily to the Desktop version ensures access to all the other useful features of the site on your mobile device.

The Tangle Refresher series, aka Buried Treasure, spotlights hidden tangle gems from the past. It can remind you of tangles you might not have used for a while or introduce you to some you haven’t come across yet.
Here are five more tangle pattern gems and a Tangle Refresher from a year (or two) ago for your tangling pleasure. Remember to check out the “More Good Stuff” links below too. Zenful tangling!
BTW as you visit these tangles it would be great if you’d take a moment to leave a comment and Tweet or “like” them on Facebook to share them with your followers. Sharing links are on the left side of each tangle’s page. Thanks!

Linda, thank you AGAIN for the time you spend offering so much encouragement and inspiration to the Zentangle community! These Buried Treasure reminders give me such a positive nudge to revisit, retry and rejoice in ALL that’s available on this site! Honestly, I don’t know what we’d do without you!! <3
Thanks, Jan! Appreciate your moral support very much 🙂 I love the Buried Treasure series too, and I’m often really surprised to find a tangle is already a year old. Time flies …
Hi,
Operator error suspected here, lol, but I cannot find a mobile/desktop toggle or even a mobile version.
Hi Jane, how odd. What is the make and model of your mobile device so I can check into it. Thanks!
So many beautiful patterns, all very inspiring. I’m just tip-toeing into pen and ink, but I already love it!
Thanks for all the hard work you do on this site. It is much appreciated.
Thanks for this, in addition to general gratitude for this site.
Thank you, Linda. I am busily tangling all the patterns onto 2″ x 2″ squares to put into my traveling notebook for easy reference. Such a pleasurable task! And thanks to all the tanglers who contribute in one way or the other. Beautiful work by all. Now to get back to work…or rather to tangling!
I do not see the toggles you mentioned to go between the mobile and the desktop versions. I am using an iPad Air 2.
By the way, THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO to provide us with such an enjoyable pastime.
And I stopped receiving the Weekly Digest starting in March 2016, so I resigned up again for it. I had been receiving it for many months.
Hi Katie, the toggles work fine on the iPad Air2’s we tested so I’m not sure what to advise. Maybe an iPad forum can help? Sorry I haven’t any suggestions as I’m not very familiar with the iPad. Regarding the Weekly Digest, it would stop being delivered if FeedBlitz was not able to deliver it meaning your ISP (yahoo) blocked delivery or if your inbox was full. After a number of unsuccessful attempts an undeliverable email address is automatically removed. But whatever the case I’m glad you signed up again. 🙂
I have Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and do not see toggle buttons either.
Hi Lo, are you sure you’re looking at the very bottom of the page, they aren’t “buttons” but links as shown in the images above. In our tests it’s working fine but if you’re still having problems you can use this link to access the desktop version: https://tanglepatterns.com/?wptouch_switch=desktop
As someone who has only recently found your site and on my mobile phone at that, I wondered about things you mentioned in some of your posts. Things like an alphabetical listing of tangles left me scratching my head. Im so glad to know that I wasn’t misreading things after all. I really don’t use the desktop version much, as it’s so tiny on the screen, but it’s good to know it’s there. Thank you so much for all the work you’ve done and continue to do on this site. It’s early Thanksgiving up here, as you know and I’ll certainly be giving thanks for you and your site. What a generous spirit you have!
Welcome Carol, there are quite a few advantages to using the desktop version of the site and you probably already know you can enlarge it on your phone with your fingers. Aside from all the useful things in the sidebars, and as you noted the alphabetic tangle menu bar, I would very much miss the scrolling band of tangles at the top of the page which is not in the mobile version. And since it’s easy to switch back and forth between them, you can have the best of both worlds in the palm of your hand.
Thank you for your Canadian Thanksgiving wishes (coming up Monday, Oct 10th, also Columbus Day), I deeply appreciate your kind thoughts. Best wishes to you too – and all my Canadian friends and rellies – for a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am blessed to enjoy this wonderful occasion twice each year 🙂
