It’s a Barbara bonus! Chloë is the second tangle this week from California tangler Barbara Finwall.
You might recognize the bold style of Chloë that characterizes some of Barbara’s tangles.
Like these, Chloë uses the design principle of alternation which makes the eye move back and forth in a rhythm through the use of contrast. This is also evident in several of the Zentangle-original tangles like Eye-Wa and Striping, for example.
Chloë is named after Barbara’s 20-year-old cat. I could be mistaken, but isn’t that a truly remarkable age for a cat? Go Chloë!
Chloë‘s grid squares, or fragments as the new Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1 names them, come together to create what Rick and Maria term a meta-pattern. If you focus on the center of my example above you’ll see a large quatrefoil floral shape – the meta-pattern created by the pattern in adjoining grid squares/fragments.
Barbara illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Chloë below. She demonstrates Chloë at two different scales in her ZIA which also includes her Petal Pusher tangle from earlier this week along with Karry Heun’s lovely Sand Swirl.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please do leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours.

I like the positive and the negative. Nice pattern. Thank you.
Thank you for your “thank you”.
I really appreciate it”.
Barbara
Yet another beautiful pattern! Thank you so much for what you do.
Paula Commander
Thanks so much for your comment!
Barbara
Nice one! Fun to do in color too.
Sounds like a good idea! I haven’t tried it in color.
Barbara
Wonderful pattern! It’s sort of “Bremner-esque” with the black and white juxtaposition. Love it!
What a wonderful compliment. Thanks!
Barbara
Very nice! I like the weight of this one. It works well against finer patterns.
Thank you so much!
Barbara
This is such a fun one! I love using grid patterns but this one looks so much less- griddy 😉 ha ha.
Chloe and I both thank you.
I love grid patterns, too. And I love it when they, surprisingly, end up not looking “griddy”.
Barbara
I’m just seeing this as a “tangle refresher” a year later (2017) and Chloe has just gone to the “great beyond” after 21 years. She had a wonderful long life. This pattern will always make me think of her.
Barbara
Barb, so sorry to hear of your loss. And thanks to Chloe we have a lovely tangle to remember her by. Best, Linda
