How to draw DOODAH

Doodah is the latest Zentangle®-original tangle published by co-founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas.

This fun tangle was first released to CZTs attending the zenAgain event last November (2018) and has since appeared in the Zentangle Mosaic app. And now it’s also available to “the rest of us”! 😉

Rick writes,

Exciting things happen at zenAgain events. At our last zenAgain, we introduced some new tangles. One of them is doodah.

This tangle is super-simple to tangle, yet it offers a lovely texture.

It is well suited to use as a border tangle and you can distort it to your heart’s content.

Maria had been playing with this architecturally inspired pattern for some time and, at the last minute, we decided to introduce it at zenAgain.

Maria explains its name:

This tangle was called Doodah because I thought it looked like a zipper and I thought zippity-doo-dah.

... you see it a lot on borders on frames and in buildings … so effective and almost Egyptian looking.

Maria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for tangling Doodah here in the Zentangle newsletter. The newsletter includes beautiful inspiring Zendala examples featuring Doodah. “As you can see, you can distort it to your heart’s content.

BTW – in both the CZT newsletter and on the Mosaic app this tangle is spelled as all one word – Doodah – therefore a priori I’m sticking with the original spelling.

Those who participated in Project Pack #5, Zentangle Cartouches, might recall that Maria uses Doodah in the Day 7 video as part of this cartouche.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
