Ellish is the latest lovely new tangle from Maria Thomas at Zentangle® HQ. It was recently introduced at CZT Seminars 22 and 23 in April and to all CZTs shortly thereafter.
As Rick writes, “Maria deconstructed this deliciously layered and interwoven tangle from the cursive letter ‘L’.”
I think you will be amazed at how varied this tangle can be and as Maria says, it’s curvy and Betweedy! And so much fun to draw!
For my example of Ellish I used one of Maria’s illustrations with the upper portions of 3 cursive L’s (without the bottom loop) meeting at the center point (see the bottom left in the image below). I could have continued on to layer mine out more but I liked what it looked like at this point. So I stopped. I think it would make a nice piece of silver jewellery. No clue how to do that.
Maria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Ellish here in the latest Zentangle newsletter which also features beautiful examples of Ellish on a Renaissance Tan Zendala tile and on the original white Zentangle tile.
These are more Ellish examples from the development stages which Rick and Maria have generously given me permission to share.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Happy Victoria Day to all our friends and rellies in “The North”
Although Robert and I’ve lived in the U.S. for well over 30 years, I’m Canadian and all my wonderful family lives there so we always celebrate Canadian holidays as well as American ones. Lucky us (two Thanksgivings!)! Today is a federal holiday in Canada observed “at least since 1845” celebrating Queen Victoria’s birthday (May 24th).
Victoria Day is celebrated on the last Monday before May 25 and sort of unofficially kicks off the summer in Canada (which the weather usually ignores). The holiday sometimes coincides with our Memorial Day holiday weekend here in the U.S., which is celebrated on the last Monday of the month. Visit this page for some fun facts about Queen Victoria.

I am overcome by how much I love this tangle! It is L plus aura.
L + Aura = Laura! That’s me! My colleague named Laura also loved it. What a nice gift! Thank you, Zentangle, and Linda for sharing it!
So, Ellish marks what number Official Zentangles (that is, how many are there now?) [I’ve listed around 70, which I’m reproducing and organizing] I’m still trying to learn and master as many ofthe Original tangles out for “public consumption” as I can. Later on, I can branch out into others’ designs, or even come up with my own.
The answer to your question is right here on the site: LLinda’s List of Official (Zentangle®-original tangles)
perfect!
