Zentangle’s Project Pack #05 introduces us to Zentangle Cartouches. As Maria notes in the introductory video:
Cartouche is an old-world word that we revived just for Zentangle. Traditionally a cartouche is a decorative frame surrounding an image or an inspiration.
Today we bring back this lovely word to describe our approach of using the Zentangle Method to create ornate frames and borders around photos and other items that we might want to make a home for.
SUPPLIES: This Project Pack is available here ($28.95) in the zentangle.com store and it’s certainly a convenient way to get all the supplies for the project. However for those of us whose budgets are tight, the Introduction video reviews the items in the Project Pack and you might discover you have suitable alternatives in your own Zentangle supplies.
The following chronology is a summary of the videos for Project Pack #05 with links to the individual videos. Either click the Day #’s title link or the image itself to view the full video on YouTube.
We take simple tangles and use them in unexpected ways. We work with different ways to mount photos and objects. Then we play with auras, tangle enhancers, and creative shading techniques to bring special focus to some of your most meaningful possessions.
It isn’t necessary to watch the videos in sequence, but it will be very helpful for you to watch the Introduction video first.
Introduction
Again, as I noted above, It isn’t necessary to watch the videos in sequence, but it will be very helpful for you to watch this video first.
“Join Rick and Maria in this introduction video as they explore the inspiration behind cartouches, the project pack materials and how to prepare and mount your keepsakes for tangling!
Project Pack No. 05 was inspired by the lost art of preserving or enhancing life’s special memories.
The Project Pack has all the supplies you will need to follow along with us as you adorn your most post precious keepsakes.
Gather up your treasured photographs, trinkets, stamps, tickets, coins, spoons, memorabilia and jewelry and showcase them in beautiful Zentangle displays.
Create the perfect gifts for family and friends.
Together, we will explore fun, and “outside-the-box” ideas on how to mount and “frame” your treasures using Zentangle inspired techniques.
Multiple video tutorials will guide you through the use of the Project Pack contents.
Each video will demonstrate a different way to create illuminations and borders. . . and perhaps a dingbatz or two.”

Day 7
In Day 7’s video (11:58) – Tangle along with Maria as she guides you through the 7th video in the project pack series. Maria mounts an antique watch from Rick’s family on black cardstock and embellishes it with a beautiful cartouche done with a gold Gelly Roll pen. Maria uses Doodah to embellish this tile.
Day 8
In Day 8’s video (13:47) – Tangle along with Maria as she guides you through the 8th video in the project pack series. Maria begins with an unusual string — “a wild and wonderful border” — which she then fills with tangles to frame another photo of their grandson Wyatt. Watch for the segment (around 9:23) where Maria does “a weighted version of Printemps“. [I’ve added this video to the Printemps page for future reference.]
Wrap-Up
In the final video in the Project Pack 5 Series (20:06) – Join Rick and Maria for the Project Pack Wrap-Up. Rick and Maria share some finished cartouche projects that did not appear in the series videos.
