Ohio tangler Joan Stark writes, “Peace, calmness, ZEN. We all could use some peace in our lives.”
So right, especially after last week. Joan had the beautiful summer weather and her garden on her mind when she came up with this pattern.
I bet I can guess what you’re thinking. In Zentangle® we don’t do flowers (= drawing some thing) and generally I heed this principle and the non-objective patterns of the Zentangle Method™. But today I’m sharing Joan’s Peace Out, regardless. Because to restate: “we all could use some peace in our lives“.
Peace Out.
Joan writes,
“This tangle is one that ‘grows’ like Bunzo, Pokeroot, Pokeleaf, Pendrills, Antidots, and others.
It can grow anywhere and in any way. I start with an orb and put petals around it. The number of petals doesn’t matter. Size doesn’t matter either.
Then I add more small orbs at the tips of any of the petals and build more petals around those. These secondary figures won’t be complete as they are so close to the previous one. But they will look like they are peeking out from under the previous ones!
Finally, it’s possible to darken the orbs and add shading to the petal shapes.
That’s it! Simple but pretty.
When you play with it try making all different sizes of designs with a few starters. The result is something really cool!
It feels so 70s to me… and reminds me of the photo of the girl putting flowers into a soldier’s rifle. It made me think of peace.
My name for this tangle is the phrase ‘Peace Out’ — something my kids used to say and myself sometimes.“
Peace Out is SO EASY, as Joan points out “simple but pretty“. And it just keeps growing and growing and growing until you run out of space. Let PEACE grow!!
Joan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Peace Out below where she uses it as a ribbon-style tangle along the left side and in a free-form version in the sample tile, together with a “modified version” of CZT Sue Jacobs’s Vigne.

Love this and I can’t WAIT to try it!
Ahhh, yes. Peace is what we need and this tangle is so perfect for this. I love the “flower” look, but while drawing it out I will think of orbs and 2 curves that come together so I’m not naming things. 😉 I will use it today. Thanks Joan! I’m there with ya. Peace Out!!
Thank you for giving us Peace Out. May all of us do what we can to help in these times. Lovely tangle.
Very fun organic tangle to play with. Thanks and peace to everyone too.
Hi Joan, Congratulations! Thanks for sharing, AGAIN!
Trish
Such an adorable tangle, and the name is perfect. Congratulations!
Less is more, that is true, uncomplicated but lovely tangle and pleasant to draw!
I love the name and the easy-peazy steps! I belong to an organization (PEO) that has the daisy as its flower. This tangle will be great for making letters in my artwork for the organization. Thank You!
Thank you for all your kind comments. I enjoyed how this tangle grew in a freeform style. You don’t have to think of daisies or flowers when tangling, just peace.
So pretty! I love to do organic tangles, such a nice change from all the grid tangles! Thanks!
