Hello there! Yes indeed, we’re back for another week of fun tangles to explore 🙂
Today marks the third year this country has officially celebrated June 19th – Juneteenth – as a federal holiday and this year June 19th happens to fall on a Monday, making for a long weekend for some.
And since it falls on a tangle day it’s worth knowing a little more about this “observation of a vital story for all Americans … an annual reaffirmation of a commitment to build an inclusive democracy” (The Washington Post).
Wikipedia covers the holiday’s historical details in depth and here are some selected snippets:
Juneteenth is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas. Originating in Galveston, Juneteenth has since been observed annually in various parts of the United States, often broadly celebrating African-American culture. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
… Observance today is primarily in local celebrations. In many places, Juneteenth has become a multicultural holiday. … Celebrations include picnics, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, blues festivals and Miss Juneteenth contests. Red food and drinks are traditional during the celebrations, including red velvet cake and strawberry soda, with red meant to represent resilience and joy.
… When it was officially made a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, it became one of five date-specific federal holidays along with New Year’s Day (January 1), Independence Day (July 4), Veterans Day (November 11), and Christmas Day (December 25).
So Happy Juneteenth and maybe break out your joyful red Micron for our Monday tangle 🙂
There’s nothing better than super easy tangles that are pretty as well. And today’s delicate Kim is sweet, super easy and incredibly useful for filling a few blank spaces in your Zentangle® art.
Kim is from Colombian-living-in-Sweden CZT Claudia Caro and it’s her second tangle on the site.
Claudia writes,
I am enclosing a pattern that I deconstructed from nature last weekend after visiting a client in Värnamo 🙂
Sweden is at its best this time of year. Still green despite the lack of water.
This pattern is thought of as a filling-pattern, has few strokes and may suit beginners and try to follow the “icso” philosophy of Zentangle.
I love this happy little tangle and it’s so easy to do starting with those y-shaped curves. Claudia has embellished hers with bits of drop shadows (there’s a good chance there’s enough graphite/white chalk left over on your tortillions to accomplish this) but I went with the straight up version for my example.
Claudia illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Kim below. Claudia uses Kim on a sweet black 3Z tile with the Zentangle-originals Pokeroot and Icanthis and on the back of a white Zentangle tile with the Zentangle-originals Pokeroot, Pokeleaf, Hollibaugh, Marasu, Rixty and Tipple. Whew.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

A very pretty pattern, especially coupled with Poke Root and Poke Leaf. Love the simplicity of it, too.
What a fun sweet little organic like tangle.
I find this tangle so delicate and organic! Watching it grow on my tiles is a lovely meditative experience <3
I was looking for a nice simple tangle to fill in some space. This one’s pretty and definitely will use again!
