Waybop is the newest tangle to be publicly released by the founders of Zentangle®, Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, and what fun this one is!
Waybop was first introduced at the zenAgain CZT reunion last November but today everyone gets to play with this great new tangle.
Attendees of the 2016 CZT-only event were invited to suggest names for two of the four new tangles introduced there: Drawings, Icanthis, Noom and Waybop. The name chosen for this tangle was from Rhode Island CZT Charlann Walker.
Noom, as yet to be publicly introduced, was named by CZT Noah Thomas, Maria’s son. Names were chosen by attendees putting their suggestions on a slip of paper, without their name. When the winning name was announced, the person who submitted the name stood up and received a prize. Imagine the surprised faces when everyone realized the name chosen was by Maria’s son!
Regarding Waybop Rick writes,
This tangle generates a great woven effect and it can be as boldly stark or as deliciously embellished as you fancy.
The trick is always to begin with an even number of “seeds.”
It’s a wonderfully flexible and adaptable tangle.
Though it may appear complicated Waybop is not difficult at all, just remember to turn your tile — it really makes all the difference.
There are so many ways to vary the overall shape, always remembering that pairs of seeds are necessary. For my example I used 8 seeds.
My example is a very basic Waybop but in addition to using different combinations of the seed pairs, there are many many possibilities for varying this tangle using auras and/or using other tangles to fill the open spaces. Shading the “over-unders” puts the icing on the Waybop cake.

Thanks for sharing this one! Have been playing with it for the past few days and am finding it rather challenging but also nicely versatile.
I am brand new to Zentangle and am beginning to understand the merits of the activities: “one stroke at a time”, focused art. Finally, I have learned that this really can relax a person. I was wandering around lost when I found this TREASURE!!!! It is such an intricate pattern, but is simple to complete! The tiles by Maria are beautiful!
