Tangle Refresher 105 – Featuring a bit about solstices and – a sun tangle?

Tangle Refresher!Happy Friday, and Happy Father’s Day weekend everyone. Wow, it’s half way through June already and this weekend is not only Father’s Day but the solstice is also on Sunday.

In the Northern Hemisphere it’s the Summer solstice where we enjoy our “longest day” and in the Southern Hemisphere Sunday’s the Winter solstice and the “shortest day”.

From Wikipedia, “A solstice is an astronomical event that occurs twice each year as the Sun reaches its highest or lowest excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. The solstices, together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In many cultures the solstices mark either the beginning or the midpoint of winter and summer.

The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun’s path (as seen from Earth) comes to a stop before reversing direction. … The term solstice can also be used in a broader sense, as the date (day) when this occurs. The day of the solstice is either the longest day of the year (in summer) or the shortest day of the year (in winter) for any place outside of the tropics.”

This beautiful time-lapse image from a radio telescope located in northern Chile shows the Sun’s passage over the Earth over a six-month time period. (Is this a sun tangle?)

A solargraph taken from the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment at the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory in the southern hemisphere. This is a long-exposure photograph, with the image exposed for six months in a direction facing east of north, from mid-December 2009 until the southern winter solstice in June 2010. The sun’s path each day can be seen from right to left in this image across the sky; the path of the following day runs slightly lower, until the day of the winter solstice, whose path is the lowest one in the image.” Wikipedia

While our sun comes to a full stop in its celestial journey, it’s time for swimming pools and barbeques in the North, and hearty stews and cheery fires in the South. Fascinating, our planet.

Enjoy a beautiful weekend regardless of your time zone. And make some time to tangle …
