How to draw BARNEY

Named for its resemblance to barnacles, today’s Barney tangle comes to us from Vermont Certified Zentangle Teacher Sadelle Wiltshire.

Sadelle was inspired by a digital image she saw on flickr and she deconstructed the pattern based on that inspiration.

Sadelle’s original version of Barney is actually constructed on a basic hexagonal or honeycomb-type grid à la Sparkool. One of the variations she shows is an “ungridded” version of Barney that I chose to do here for my example. And lest you think it’s a little plain wait until you see all the suggestions Sadelle gives for variations.

She writes,

“inside of each ‘cell’ create another hexagon shape by following the inside angles of the cell, BUT vary the size and placement of the smaller hexagons in each cell.  Don’t worry about perfect!  The funkier they are, the more fun! … The real fun begins with shading and highlights.“

I think you’ll enjoy finding places to tuck Barney in one or more of its varieties in your Zentangle® art.

Sadelle illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Barney here on her blog and gives several tips for shading her tangle. Update July 2022: Sadelle’s website doesn’t appear to be accessible so until that is resolved, here are her steps for tangling Barney.
