For the past few years Strathmore — one of the companies making quality artist papers and journals — has offered excellent online art workshops in their Strathmore Art Studio series with experienced artists covering different topics and of course featuring Strathmore papers.
The workshops are free and include several 20-minute-or-so instructional videos, downloadable PDFs of the lessons, and a gallery forum where everyone can post their lessons. During the four weeks that each workshop is live the instructors give feedback on the lessons posted in the galleries.
The live workshops with feedback are now over for 2014, but the workshop video lessons will remain available through the end of December. The only difference between participating live or signing up now is that the instructors no longer give feedback, however the videos and PDFs are still available and the galleries are open to post your lessons and receive feedback from your fellow students.
The advantage of coming to these “late” is that the live workshops take place over the span of four weeks, but now you can view all four at once. Art workshop binge viewing. Silver lining!
You must register and be logged in to be able to see the videos and lessons. All you have to do is sign up for an account, then log in and you’re all set. When you’re done you can unsubscribe if you don’t want to be notified of 2015’s free workshops.
This year the three 2014 Strathmore Art Studio workshops are:
- WORKSHOP 1 – Back to Basics with artist instructor Ernest Ward. An exploration of basic drawing skills.
- WORKSHOP 2 – Visual Journal Fodder with “The Journal Fodder Junkies” artists and authors David Moddler and Eric Scott. “Focuses on the use of simple materials and techniques to begin and develop richly layered visual journal pages.” Make great background pages for tangling!
- WORKSHOP 3 – Watercolor Sketching and Journaling with artist Gay Kraeger. “Gay will guide you through learning watercolor one step at a time. She will start by showing you the basics, then move into using quick sketches, page design, lettering and more watercolor techniques to give you all the tools you need to learn how to keep a special illustrated journal of your surroundings.”
You can read more about the workshops and how they work on this Strathmore Artists Online Workshops page. The link to register is at the top right of the page.
Take one workshop, or take them all. They are all good, but I especially loved Gay Kraeger’s watercolor classes. Here’s a taste of her workshop Week 1, you’ll have to register to see the rest.
That’s it for this week, I hope you enjoy Strathmore’s free art workshops. Please let me know!
BTW, I’ve also filed this link on the TUTORIALS tab so you can easily locate it again.
