How to draw CHABA

Hi there friends, it’s Labor Day weekend!

Our last long weekend of Summer 2022 … I, for one, have no idea where summer went. BUT on the plus side, can pumpkin spice lattes be far away???

Today’s Chaba tangle is from Hong King CZT Bing Chan and it’s her first on the site.

You’ll undoubtedly recall in the past I’ve said how in our neck of the woods the Labor Day weekend is generally regarded as the height of our hurricane season so Chaba seemed an appropriate tangle for today. A talisman to keep them away so-to-speak, even as we keep a watchful eye on a couple of systems out there “as we speak”, including Hurricane Danielle looking like it’s heading towards the UK!

As Bing notes Chaba shares DNA with several other tangles and her examples show some great embellishments that might work with any of its relatives.

She introduces herself and her tangle:

I just joined the CZT seminar last Easter (2022), CZT Asia 18 which is great and eye opening. A year ago, I was amazed by Zentangle®, not only the beauty of all those patterns, but also enjoy the peace of mind while tangling.

I discover Chaba on the typhoon day. It’s named Chaba because it’s the name of the typhoon, tropical cyclone (named by Thailand) – tropical flower, hibiscus. The satellite picture of Chaba looks like a round, huge swirl with an eye in the middle. Though Chaba was blowing very hard outside (wind speed 117 – 180 km/hrs), when I started to tangle the eye of Chaba, aura after aura, I feel safe and at ease. The satellite picture is attached:

After I finalised Chaba, I wonder if it could be a new pattern. It is similar to some of the patterns like Lapwing, Spoolies, Sand Swirl, Verve or even Well. Or will be that too simple?! “Anything is possible.” It’s no harm to try. Therefore, I write to you.

Chaba is a closed round pattern and starts with number “6”, lots of auras. We take off in different parts of one side of the wing, (not necessary in same interval) and land at the same point. It can be a border or a frame, even a string.

Enjoy the auras of Chaba. Make use your imagination to play with it. Round shape tangle always makes me happy like, Jetties and Tipples.

Though it is named after a typhoon, we believe the sunshine is always here. Have fun with Chaba!

Bing illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Chaba below and she includes three beautiful tiles showing various ways to explore this tangle. “The additional patterns I use are Crescent Moon, Tipple, Eke, Punzel, Shattuck, Doodah, Dragonair, Icantoo and Keeko.” She also shows how Chaba can be used as a string.
