This cool tangle pattern, Dragonair, comes from my fellow classmate and newly-minted CZT®, Norma Burnell. Norma demonstrated this tangle at last week’s Zentangle® teacher certification course in Providence, Rhode Island. There were ooh’s and ahh’s around the room as we watched how simply this tangle unfolds. A true tangle pattern!
Norma is located in Jamestown, Rhode Island, so if you’re from that area look for her classes when she begins teaching.
“Discovering the Art of Zentangle has opened the door to more creative possibilities within my artwork. I like to combine the art of Zentangle with other forms of art and incorporate many of the patterns I seen in nature into my ZIA pieces.
Having been involved in the arts all my life, I enjoy drawing and painting as well as “tangling” and have taught art classes to adults and children as well as classes in jewelry making.
I received my Zentangle Teacher Certification in October 2011 at the 7th Zentangle Teacher Training Program held in Providence, Rhode Island, and am looking forward to teaching this wonderful art form. After taking a Zentangle class with a CZT in the winter of 2010 I became totally hooked. I find tangling a relaxing and rewarding method of expression and letting my creative side soar.”
Dragonair is a combination of the official tangles Fescu and Cadent. It comes together quickly and elegantly and though Norma mostly uses it in her ZIA dragons (Zentangle®-inspired art), it is a great tangle to use in your actual Zentangles too. Norma illustrates how to draw Dragonair here.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. When is the next class to be Certified? Its on my bucket list!
Hi Sherry, the next certification class is in February 2012, the 21st to 24th.
Thank You, Linda! Crossing my fingers (and my toes!)that I can go!
This is my favourite by far, such a joy to work with.
I used this tangle in the wings of a bird I drew, so this is Zentangle-inspired art.
I love this tangle. I first came across it in The Art of Zentangle. And just realized it’s on here too. YAY! I think this is one to bring into the present. 😀
