Hello there friends and welcome back for another week of inspirational tangle creativity.
AND … we begin with another! Zentangle®-original tangle, Locar, one of the very early original tangles.
Locar shares DNA with another tangle from those very early days of Zentangle, Verdigogh.
Zentangle HQ hasn’t publicly released printable steps for tangling Locar but their recent video makes it super easy to follow. For my example I used the “thorny” version but you can also round the tips, square them off or probably even “Mooka” them for another imaginative botanical species. (Or combine all the different ways in one for a Crazy Locar?) For a super challenge, try layering sprigs of Locar by using Hollibaugh‘s drawing behind technique.
On Day 8, the final day of Project Pack #21‘s Organic Tangles: Tangles of a Botanical Nature series, together Martha and Molly tangle their fantastical Thorny Wishing Well Weed botanical specimen using Well, Tipple, Striping, Locar and Pokeroot. At 15:11 in the video, Martha demonstrates the steps for tangling Locar.

I tangled a ZIA in 2014 than framed it and hung it in my breakfast room. It is definitely a fav of mine.
Sadly, I did not write the names of the tangles on the back for future reference and there is one I’ve been trying to identify ever since.
Guess what? My quest is over. It’s the rounded and wilder version of Locar. When it’s drawn without regard to symmetry, the tendrills find their way into every little space.
A word to the wise. Write tangle names on the reverse side of your work — even on the pieces you think you will never forget.
