Originally I planned Rolling Castello for our Monday tangle, but when Zentangle’s Locar came along we made a swap to get the hot news out quickly.
So today we get to enjoy another super easy tangle.
Rolling Castello is from Japanese CZT Kazue Ito and it’s her third on the site. Most recently we explored Kazue’s sweet Bonsai tangle.
And speaking of sweet, Rolling Castello was inspired by a sweet Japanese snack delicacy. Kazue explains:
Suzu castella is a baked confectionery made by forming castella dough into a bell shape.
Mix flour, eggs, milk, honey and sugar, pour into a mold like a takoyaki machine.
Apply heat of 200 to 300°C from above and below. After browning the other side of the puffed dough, finishing with a dusting of icing sugar is also common.
I was curious to find out a little more, just what is castella dough? I learned from Wikipedia it’s a traditional Japanese Sponge Cake.
They may be molded in various shapes; a popular Japanese festival food is baby castella, a bite-sized version.
Also found this recipe and its introduction reads:
Bring one of Japan’s favourite baked desserts into your home with this traditional castella sponge cake recipe. Introduced to the Japanese by Portuguese merchants in the 16th Century and now a speciality of the Nagasaki region, Castella sponges have a finer, more compact texture than traditional sponge cakes, while still being lighter than pound cakes or butter cakes. This castella is ideal for serving during afternoon tea, or for dessert.
For more tangles inspired by a similar sweet tooth, check out CZT Ria Matheussen’s Zeppo and CZT Jody Genovese’s Kruller. There’s also Quasahnt, although it’s not necessarily a confectionery.
Kazue illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Rolling Castello below where the original tangle uses ovals and she includes a Crescent Moon-ish variation using round orbs. Kazue also features Rolling Castello in two minimalist monotangles.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!
