Our second-to-last tangle for 2023 is Suru, from German CZT Nina Dreher-Göddertz and it’s her first on the site.
Nina is from Dormagen, a town located between Düsseldorf and Cologne in Germany. She introduces herself:
Since I was a child pens and paper were my passion. I drew and sketched whenever I could. Actually I wanted to study art and design, but I refused to do so and I don’t remember why.
I live near Cologne in Germany, am married and have got a daughter and a cute little dog.
End of May 2020 I got to know the Zentangle Method™ for the first time and was so passionate about it right away, that I signed up for the CZTEU4 seminar in March 2021. I felt that this journey was going to be great but I haven’t thought that it would be THAT great.
What I really appreciate besides this wonderful and soothing art is this wonderful and nurturing community. Being connected to so many people all over the world and even connecting with my own students is just a wonderful gift. Spending time together and giving back is so wonderful.
She explains her inspiration for Suru,
My pen and I are in the flow and I deconstructed a new pattern which I would like to share with you. It’s “SURU” and flew right away on my tile without thinking of anything. It was “just there” and it was so much fun.
Suru shares DNA to a degree with the Zentangle-originals Printemps and Ambler, perhaps even Mooka, and more closely with Fescurus Verae and Marley.
Nina illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Suru below and in her examples she shows us several ways it can be used on your tiles. I particularly like on her third tile how she’s combined our “normal” orb embellishments with a square variation, such a simple but effective change.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
