How to draw MONSTER

Zentangle pattern: Monster. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Hello again my lovely tangling friends.

California CZT Yoko Kageyama shares her organic Monster tangle with us today, and it’s anything but a monster. (Although, could it become monster-ously popular?)

Yoko tells us about her inspiration for her tangle.

I came up with this tangle hoping to create an organic tangle that resembles a houseplant leaf of “Monstera”.

I’ve studied how I can make the broadleaf into a simple-to-draw tangle.

Like my previous tangle, August, this new tangle is another versatile tangle that can be drawn as a cute leaf, an elongated leaf, or as a border by adding the basic pattern of a line with curl. I got the inspiration from the recently published tangle, “Wyfore”. I believe the curly edge adds the soft feeling of the leaves.

By drawing a half version, (only a curly part, not with a line) we can draw a cute leaf that is similar to Toodles. Also, with 2 full curls (meaning curls with lines), I think I succeeded in drawing the Monstera leaf that I’ve been wanting to draw.

Yes, the tangle name “Monster” came from the plant “Monstera”, just omitting the last letter “e”.

In this tile Yoko demonstrates how Monster can be used as a ribbon by adding it along a string and varied in size for interest.

As Yoko demonstrates in this tile, Monster can easily be used as a string and filled with other tangles.

Yoko illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Monster below and she notes that Monsteris drawn with Ravel” in her tile examples. Yoko’s version of the Zentangle®-original Ravel resembles many of the 5-leaf flower-like tangles we have around. In her first tile about, a Grey Phi tile, she includes the Zentangle-originals Cyme and Printemps.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle.
