This tangle pattern named Coil was created by soon-to-be CZT® Sue Jacobs of Chicago.
Sue tells us,
“I’ve only been doing Zentangles (and Zentangle inspired art) since last summer but have found them addictive.
I’ve been a decorative painter for many years and love having new ways to grow.
While I am not a CZT – I plan to be soon – I’m attending the seminar in February. Then I hope to teach in the Chicago area.“
Sue illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing her tangle pattern Coil here. Sue recently started a new blog here, so if you’re in the Chicago area keep an eye out for her workshops in a month or two.
NOTE: This pattern was added before I became a CZT and learned Maria’s guidelines for what makes a tangle. Sue starts her pattern with pencil planning which we do not use in Zentangle. However, instead of the pencil Sue begins with when we use pen dots instead of pencil, we make Coil eligible to be called a tangle.
Update: March 6, 2011 – Sue Jacobs has posted a video demonstrating how to draw Coil.
Guest tangler: Mariët Lustenhouwer
Mariët Lustenhouwer from Dronten in The Netherlands used Sue’s Coil tangle pattern in this cool Zentangle she posted in her flickr photostream. Check it out for more of her lovely art including some amazing pencil sketches.

Hi there everyone! I love this tangle. [smile] Here is one of my Coil samples. A twisted version, with a rod through the middle (like Mariët’s). This Zentangle® was done for Laura’s two-pencil-string challenge (on a traditional 3.5″ square Zentangle® tile).
wow….great..thank you …well done video.
Thank you soooooo much for this fab demo vidio and also for sharing such a clever and intricate looking tangle. I’m off now find Sue’s blog and then to give it COIL a try.
The examples that you did are so beautiful and creative, what a great video as well, very easy to understand and I can also see myself doing this tangle soon! Thank you so much.
Very nice tangle. Your descriptive language and quiet gentle voice makes it a pleasure to follow your instructions.
Wow! Thanks! I will definitely be doing this.
Great tangle! Thank you for sharing the video, it is well done. I appreciate the time you’ve taken to share your tangle in such a clear way.
I love this tangle!! It’s so much fun to do. I love the video too.
Another comment about a tangle that was put up a few years ago that got me to it. I don’t know how I missed this one before.
Thank you all!!
I like this beautiful tangle, especially when you use te pattern as a border. Thank you for sharing!
Fantastic illustration on how to achieve the variations of Coil. Thank You !
