Today’s cool Dexirr tangle is from our Belgian CZT and prolific tangle deconstructor Ria Matheussen. Ria has loads of great tangles on the site, be sure to check them out!
Ria always sends lovely chatty emails along with her tangles, we exchange our thoughts on the state of ourselves and the world. In her email with this submission Ria explains she was away on vacation and as always she was on the lookout for new tangles:
I didn’t find a new one but back home, while looking at Dex I got the idea to make an irregular form.
So, I’m glad to send you a variation on the original Dex or we could say a brother/sister.
Dex is regular and so the name was easy for me: Dex irregular. Just because this irregularity, Dexirr is drawn in a different way than the original Dex.
This tangle can be used in the same way: as a filler, as a background or as strokes (like I did in my example). The inside squares can be filled with other tangles/fragments. Instead of drawing exact squares, you can also draw rectangles. They can be just white or embellished in different ways. There are really many possibilities to bring variation in this pattern.
Of course, you have to pay attention while drawing, but when you focus well and take your time, it is a pleasant and logic tangle. I hope you ‘ll like it and give it a try!
Ria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Dexirr below. She shows us different ways to shade her tangle and a variation to explore as well as the ones she descrbies above. “I added a simple zendala (my favorite way of drawing) on which you can see Dexirr, surrounded by CO2, A-dalfa, Hibred, Printemps and Hollibaugh.”
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Share your tangle on TanglePatterns
Everyone is invited to share patterns on TanglePatterns.com, you do NOT need to be a CZT. In order for patterns to be considered for publication they must be submitted to me by email. In other words you have to let me know about them.
For a submission to qualify as a tangle it must be a genuine pattern (“a repeated decorative design”) and not “a thing to draw”.
From The Book of Zentangle:
“Keep it Non-representational. Zentangle artwork is intended to be non-representational. Zentangle’s elemental strokes are also non-representational.
We don’t teach complex elements such as hearts, stars or flowers. Tangles are also non-representational.”
Remember that tangles never start with pencil planning.
"A tangle has no pre-planning with pencil guidelines, grids or dots, no erased lines."
If you need a refresher on what makes a tangle, read the A PATTERN IS NOT ALWAYS A TANGLE page on the ZENTANGLES menu bar at the top of any page.
For details on how to submit your pattern for consideration visit the SUBMIT YOUR PATTERN page on the top menu bar of any page on the site. On that menu you will find these two pages:
The first page includes instructions on how to prepare and send your JPGs. (Please save me time and do not send PDFs). It also includes a link to this PDF submission form.
When your examples include additional tangles from the site, please list them in your email. (This saves me time and my memory some wear and tear.)
If your pattern is posted on your blog, attach your steps and tile JPGs to your email and be sure your email includes the direct URL so I can link to it.
And remember, to quote Zentangle's co-founders Rick and Maria: tangles should be "magical, simple and easy to create", non-objective patterns of repetitive strokes that are easy to teach and offer a high degree of success to tanglers of all ages.
"Keep the tangles as little like 'drawing something' as possible."

When you take your time to focus, you can make very relaxing drawings with this pattern. You can embellish in your own way. I wish you succes and thank you very much for your kind words!
Such a nice tangle, Ria!
Many thanks dear Beatrice, glad you like this new pattern!!!
What a fun variation. I look forward to finding an opportunity to try this, Ria.
Dexirr is found, pure by coïncidence but I never saw this variation before. Sometimes I wonder, even with already so many tangles, still new ones can be found. I’m very glad you like this one and thank you for your kind comment.
