How to draw VIPSON

Hi there, welcome back and delighted to see you again!

As November 1st is reserved to kick-start TanglePatterns’ annual fundraising appeal, this month we enjoy Monday’s tangle on Tuesday …

Our tangle today is from Canadian CZT Emily Huang and it’s her first on the site.

As Emily describes it, “Vipson is an organic tangle that likes to hug other tangles and play hide and seek using the Hollibaugh technique of drawing behind.”

Emily introduces herself,

I am Emily Huang, CZT 36, and I tangle from my home in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

I started tangling in June 2017 after being introduced to the Zentangle Method™ by my good friend and CZT, Natasha Dash. I am a Teacher-Librarian, and my library is where I share my love of tangling.

Funny enough, I found the inspiration for Vipson a few days after my very first Basics Zentangle Class. I was chaperoning a Grade 5 field trip to Victoria, BC, and during the 16-hour trip, I was intrigued by an abstract image in a stained-glass window. Unfortunately, I started my Masters program two months later and the potential tangle had to be shelved for a while.

My CZT training in November 2020 and the uninterrupted recovery time post-surgery in September 2021 have led to the deconstruction of the tangle, Vipson. Its name is a combination of “V” for the city Victoria where the stained-glass window resides and “ipson” from the incredible general surgeon who performed my cholecystectomy.

You’ll notice that Emily’s tangle is an interpretation of her inspiration, not a literal rendering. In Emily’s duotangle Renaissance tan tile, Vipson flows around the Zentangle-original Vega.

Although its inspiration is something completely different, Vipson starts out much like Liz Drake’s Tyme tangle but it goes on to “branch out” in all directions. It’s a fun one to explore.

Emily illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Vipson below where she features it in a cool monotangle with it appearing to be wrapped around the string. Lots of great movement there!
