How to draw CANTIRE

When Canadian CZT Margaret Bremner sent me a heads up on her Cantire tangle I immediately thought it would make a perfect “seasonal” tangle. Christmas trees and all that. So I’ve been saving it until now …

Most of you are very familiar with Margaret’s artistry, she has many tangles on the site — in fact Cantire is her 40th!

She’s also the creative mind behind a wonderful series of tangle tutorials she calls “and then some” exploring some of the Zentangle®-originals in a mind-boggling way. I’ve included links to those tutorials below. Be sure to check them out.

For my example of Cantire I went very basic and the result is quite bold, but when you visit Margaret’s blog you’ll see innovative ways to decorate and fill the shapes of this tangle. For example Margaret suggests using any version of the Zentangle®-original Tripoli to fill the “interstices” in the tangle where my example is solid ink.

And if I might offer an alternate suggestion: Margaret’s steps build Cantire from the center/centre out. But I started at side edge of my “tile” and drew a column of triangles then added the adjacent ones offset as the finished tangle appears. It’s quick and easy to do, even if it turns out a little wonky it’s less brain work  … 🙂 with apologies to Margaret.

I envision colorful Christmassy embellished ZIAs based on Cantire

Margaret illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Cantire here on her blog. She explains her inspiration for Cantire (which all Canadians will know immediately without the need of an explanation!) and shares several lovely examples of ways to explore her tangle.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Check out the tag margaretb for more of Margaret’s tangles on TanglePatterns.com.

Enjoy your weekend and we’ll see you back here again on Monday … keep safe!

Congrats, Margaret, on number 40!! I knew your inspiration as soon as I saw its name. <3

  • Linda Farmer, CZT

    Received by email from Donna:

“Love the name!! Looking forward to using my nation’s triangle as I start my journey through the “C” tangles! As a busy doctor I have little time for all my needlework and art projects, but once a day I sit for a few minutes before work and pen through the alphabet. I only just finished the “B”s, looking forward to forging onward ! Thank you Linda and Margaret Bremner!”

  • I like your alternate start to this pattern! I’ll try to remember to go back to the post and add this possibility. That won’t be for a little while as I’m currently at my daughter’s house awaiting the eminent arrival of a grandchild! 🙂

Cheers on #40 Margaret!! As a Canadian I could not stop giggling as I was playing with this very versatile tangle! I love collecting tangles that have a very distinct Canadian theme and this was added right away LOL!

Not surprisingly I quite enjoy using red ink, red pastel shading, and red watercolouring while exploring Cantire on various tiles 🙂
