How to draw HOOKNYE

And next Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, both holidays surrounded with all kinds of issues we never had to contemplate before. How did life get so complicated?!

Never mind. We smile, we breathe, and we tangle …

Today’s lovely twisty curvy HookNye tangle is from NY CZT Jody Genovese and as she notes, “In typical fashion for me, lots of lines and auras.

Jody has over a dozen tangles on the site and her most recent Swerve is definitely from the same “lots of lines and auras” family as HookNye.

Jody explains,

I use my journals as practice places. I admire the people who make them works of art, but though I try to do that, I always end up just using them to practice. When I go back and look through them I stumble across interesting things that I end up finding new inspiration in, tinkering with a bit and sometimes finding new patterns. That is what happened here.

It reminds me of sewing notions. The hook and eye specifically. I looked it up and was very surprised to find it had quite a long history. I guess that makes sense. We started mass producing it in the US in the 1800s. I am attaching an old advertising ad for it. My mother gave me my grandmother’s sewing box and I remembered seeing these in it, so I dug through and found a card with some on it. It looks pretty old, but unfortunately isn’t dated.

I’ve been drawing this for the past few weeks and I’m finding it a bit addicting. It really changes when you start drawing them clustered together. Fun and much easier than the clump of them looks.

I’m calling it HookNye (hook n eye) because as you will see in the advertisement I didn’t think Hump would go over well… ?

I got a chuckle out of the description that said, “One variation of the attachment incorporates a ‘Delong hump’ patented in 1889 by the Richardson & Delong Hook and Eye Company of Philadelphia. This was a raised elevation or ‘hump’ in the wire hook that prevented the eye from slipping out of the hook – except at the will of the wearer” Ha!

We have another tangle on the site that was inspired by the same sewing notion, Eyehook by CZT Debbie Perdue, a sweet ribbon-style tangle that’s very different from HookNye. Two unique tangles from the same inspiration, how cool is that.

Jody illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing HookNye below and she includes three gorgeous Zentangle® tiles featuring her tangle together with the Zentangle-originals Indy-Rella, Tipple, ‘Nzeppel and Marasu. (And a mini Bronx Cheer tucked away at the top.)

These are enlarged images from Jody’s steps above where she explains how to “create more of a twisted look by bringing the top aura down further and shortening up the bottom aura“. These show that the first aura (Step 3) crosses the S stroke from Step 1 in the middle for the regular version and lower down for the twisted version.
