NY CZT Jody Genovese is back today with a fun and Swerve-y tangle for us to explore.
Swerve is so-called, Jody writes, because it’s “a tangleation of Verve (my absolute favorite tangle ever) and Sand Swirl.”
Jody includes two beautiful Zentangle® tiles, first a Zendala with Swerve and Verve framing an ethereal watercolor center. When I asked about the medium used for the center, Jody replied that the watercolor center was created by Zentangle’s co-founder Maria Thomas, “I had taken a class with her in June and had some time to have her show me how she puts down watercolor.”
Jody’s second example on a white Zentangle tile has Swerve flowing through the center framed by the Zentangle-original Crescent Moon together with CZT Kelley Kelly’s Batumber.
Jody illustrates the “informal” step-by-step instructions from her journal for drawing Swerve below where she includes these tips: “Branch off randomly. Some will have the tails from Step 2, and some will jump right to Step 3.” It’s a fun one, I think you’re going to love it!

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Ooh, this is a fun one, Jody. I love what I call “layered lines” tangles that curve and puff and offer lots of opportunities for shading, as well as density variations. I know I will be using SWERVE a lot.
Thank you Wanda. So nice to hear. It’s a great filler!
Me too am a great fan of Verve and of course of this Swerve too! Thank you Jody for another great pattern to bring variation in our work.
Thank you Ria. You are always so supportive. Means a lot.
What a delightful tangleation – of the 2 tangles as well as the 2 names! The possibilities for lots of curvy growth in this tangle are very enticing. I’m looking forward to playing with it. Thanks Jody! 🙂
Thank you Jan! Can’t wait to see what you do with it. It will be beautiful!!
Beautiful! Can’t wait to play it.
So glad you like it Lee. Thank you for taking the time to leave a note.
Thank you for this fascinating tangle…so many possibilities. Great fun!!!! 🙂
Thanks Pamela. It really lends itself to any area and you cannot mess it up. So glad you like it!
Thank you, Jody, for another lovely tangle where I can relax and focus on the point of my pen on my paper as I try to make swervy, curvy auras. Your line work is always so even, delicate and steady!
How have I not found this before? A tangleation of two of my favourites too! Love it.
so nice thank you for this
