How to draw SAWED

Hi everyone, thanks for joining me again this week for our last tangle of October 2020!

Sawed is from New Hampshire CZT Laurie Felgate and it’s her first on the site.

Sawed fits into what turned out to be a “theme” this week of tangles created from a center orb and growing with either C strokes, as Sawed does, or S strokes as do Dian and OnS.

I live in New Hampton, New Hampshire and in July of 2016 I had my first Zentangle® lesson from CZT Bette Abdu. It was love at first stroke!

Since then I have tangled endlessly, learned many of the wonderful patterns available on your amazing site and reaped benefits from the tangle process that astound me. It has helped me not only to find a new calm and relaxed zone in my daily life, but it also helps me sleep better …envisioning tangles is way more fun than counting sheep!

I attended CZT28 in June of 2017 where I was further inspired by everyone I encountered there. I have been teaching one or two people at a time and spend many hours with my grandchildren, tangling whenever possible. They are thrilled with the Zentangle Method™, spend that beautiful quality time with me, and all have their own special Zentangle kits!

Tangling has been an awesome experience from the beginning and I appreciate how it impacts my life in so many positive ways.

I am happy to introduce my new tangle “Sawed” … so named because it reminds me a bit of Spoken, and Well, and Drawings; (SaWeD)

However, it really has it’s own identity because it is open ended, allowing for so much variety; in direction, size, line numbers (both even or odd) and even being used sectionally for new creations. It’s so fun to do and is relatively easy. I think it’s diverse, clever and sort of has a mind of its own when you get going.

The key to drawing Sawed (and I pointed it out with arrows in step out # 4) is to keep the end stroke heading out away from the center, and to leave some space between that stroke and the next line.

You can create variety by making those jagged lines deep or shallow, and use as many additional ones as desired to fill both the space left as well as the perimeter.

Not only does it take and change shape, but one can alter the direction of the lines and or the added jagged bit, giving it a whole new look as illustrated on the middle right of the examples on the right.

And then there’s adding other tangles withing this tangle, so the sky’s the limit! Shading is so big, and such an individual choice, so I’ve illustrated several different methods here. I can’t even decide which one I like best 🙂
