How to draw ONS

Today’s OnS is from Taiwan CZT Curtis Hwang who recently shared his CBeeline tangle with us.

Curtis explains the origins of OnS,

One day, I thought about what would come from combining “O” with “S”?

I tried to draw and I created the “OnS” pattern.

It is centered on “O” and “S” surrounds it. The end of S is combined with O. S can be combined with O in the opposite direction.

Fun and interesting things can happen when we ask ourselves “I wonder what would happen if … ”

Hiromi Fukoka’s Dian tangle from Monday is formed with a similar configuration of combining O and S using a stroke to connect to a center orb. In the case of Dian the S stroke is “backwards”, a mirrored S, and they both use Zentangle’s “take off and land” technique to connect to the center orb.

For my example of OnS I used Curtis’s variation with auras that challenged my arthritic thumb. Occasionally it cooperates and allows a smooth stroke, but more often now it does not go where I intend it to. So I’m learning to live with it as a small condition of living and appreciate when it does cooperate. Grateful for all the small things. 🙂

Curtis illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing OnS below where he illustrates some variations to explore including a fun heart-shaped one that is ripe for embellishment, There’s also an interesting grid-type version that I have not yet attempted. That particular version makes a great “string” to fill with other tangles (or ZIA colors).

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
