How to draw QNEZ

Zentangle pattern: Qnez. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Welcome back and a happy Friday to you.

The tropical disturbances are at it again as we approach Labor Day, traditionally the height of our hurricane season.

Today and through the weekend we’re keeping our eyes on the National Hurricane Center‘s tracking of Hurricane Laura headed in our general direction and a Tropical Storm headed north towards Texas through the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile our friends in California are dealing with terrible fires. Prayers all around in addition to everyone and everything else we’re currently saying prayers for!

Today’s Qnez tangle is from New York CZT Susan Kelley Pundt.

Qnez is Susan’s sixth tangle on the site, most recently she shared her lovely So Wat tangle with us.

Susan explains that she’s been keeping in touch with fellow CZTs over the internet and in the course of discussion one of them posted a Zenbutton. For those not familiar with CZT Marguerite Samama’s Zenbuttons, her free tutorial is located here on the site.

Susan was inspired to create a Zenbutton herself:

As I went to draw it later, I didn’t see any fragments or patterns that represented what I had in mind for part of it, so I veered off and played around and, voila, out came QNEZ (pronounced as”ku-niss”, QNEZ stands for Quick and EZ).

I played some more and created a step out.

One beauty of this pattern is that it can be drawn and embellished in a great variety of ways.

Flexibility is key, especially when the reliability of my memory is also flexible.,

For my example I mirrored the rows and used Susan’s variation that makes use of rounding to fit in some floral-like loops.

Susan illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Qnez below where she includes some variations for us to explore.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
