How to draw KEETA

Sarah recently shared her Sarnia-Cherie with us and with it we learned a little about her home land, the Channel Island of Guernsey.

As for Sarah’s Keeta

One morning “in the early hours” Sarah came up with Keeta. I asked how she  named her tangle and she replied,

Keeta was named by accident really. I was looking around for ideas for names and my partners drill was just sat there. The brand being Makita.

I then thought I really liked the sound of kita and then just changed the spelling 🙂 such random things can give ideas for names.

Free-form tangles like Keeta can be somewhat of a challenge for me, I’m more comfortable with patterns with regular order and structure to them. Of course we can always create order by placing the elements of this type of tangle side-by-side to create a ribbon or a frame but in this case I didn’t have sufficient space for that presentation without them being miniscule.

However, Keeta  is very easy and fun to do in a free-form style. If, like me, at first you get wonky shapes at Step 3, notice that each “wing” is composed of two C-curves facing in the same direction curving around the center. When you add all six of those strokes, then “close” the ends, it becomes a more manageable overall shape. I created a mutant Keeta in the upper right corner of my example by adding some vein-like strokes to it. (Upon review and reflection, maybe I did create somewhat of a ribbon after all. Huh.)

Sarah illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Keeta below and she features it in a simple monotangle.

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. TIP: tangles never start with pencil planning.
