How to draw VOYAGE

Hello again my tangling friends and welcome this Memorial Day Monday for the start of another week of fun and inspirational tangles.

We begin with another tangle in CZT Angie Gittles’s series based on designs from Southwest American pottery and this is named Voyage.

Last month we explored Zona and Kiva, just two of several more tangles based on Southwest American designs. Angie shares the fascinating bacground for this tangle, inspired by Zia Pueblo, New Mexico pottery:

During World War II, the U.S. government restricted the use of silver for civilian purposes to prioritize its availability for military needs. The Zias then started making pottery buttons with geometric designs and realistic birds as decorations. They were used on leather jackets in 1942-1943. Once silver became more available, their pottery buttons became impractical, and they stopped making them.

Ultimately, ZIA pottery designs evolved, and the rounded, static realistic birds from the buttons became streamlined birds, painted black, streaking through the air on black hachured wings. This design was often used a pottery-band motifs, often appearing in repeating wing bands around the shoulder of a pottery vessel.

Angie illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Voyage below and includes tiles showing some ideas for arranging and decorating it.

Occasions honoring the military have always resonated very deeply for me and this Memorial Day I wanted to share this beautiful and haunting song about loss with you. My sister Karen alerted the family to this glorious performance by Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLaughlan and the entire audience of 2,500 people, recorded recently at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall. Get ready for an angelic experience.
