How to draw HEARTLOCK

The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal. We’re running out of time for new tangles this year and since we had the Zentangle Project Pack Summary yesterday in place of our “traditional” tangle, I wanted to add this one today to make up for it.

Heart tangles are always popular and Heartlock also gives me a chance to add another new name to my annual TANGLE GUIDE!

This one is SO easy and fun, I had just to share it now instead of waiting for closer to February when the new heart tangles usually come out to play.

Heartlock is from almost-CZT Candace Mok from Hong Kong, she’s attending the CZT-Asia#13 certification seminar next week in Taiwan.

Heartlock is Candace’s first tangle on the site. She writes,

I started doing Zentangle® earlier this year and I enjoy doing it as it calms me down.

I am excited about it both for myself and to spread its magic to others; I am looking forward to joining the CZT-Asia#13 in Taiwan.

I always like the idea of knots — connecting, interlocking … when I draw Heartlock, aura the hearts, I feel my heart is connecting to those would be connected.

Heartlock is a very friendly tangle that can be used as string to define sections or as frame, or used to fill up a section by curling up the Heartlock or Heartlock in Hollibaugh fashion.

So easy, you’ll love it! It’s formed in a similar way to CZT Damy Teng’s Y-Chain tangle. For my example I skipped the solid inking and added a tough of graphite at the over-unders.

Candace illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Heartlock below and she features it in a simple monotangle tile. Easy and fun!

Like some help with shading your Zentangles?

It's fun and easy — forget about traditional "art rules" for shading, this is Zentangle and those rules do not apply!

As we are coached in the chapter on Shading in the Zentangle PRIMER Vol 1, "Ignore the light source ... in Zentangle shading we do not consider the type or direction of the light source. ... More often, shading is a component of the tangle itself that we use to play with dimension, emphasis, and contrast."

Everything you need to know is here in two free tutorials on TanglePatterns.

  1. TanglePatterns Shading Mini Clinic, Part 1 by CZT Marizaan van Beek, and
  2. TanglePatterns Shading Mini Clinic, Part 2 by CZT Sandy Bartholomew

You can always locate these and many other helpful tutorials by visiting the TUTORIALS tab on the pink alphabetic tangle menu bar as shown here:
