How to draw MOONWAVES

It’s been a long while since we’ve had a new tangle from fiction author Jenna Black and I’m delighted she’s back today to share her Moonwaves for your Friday tangling pleasure.

Moonwaves is her eighth tangle on the site. You can learn more about Jenna when you check out her Whalestail tangle.

It’s also been a while since we explored an ogee-grid based tangle, always fun and maybe a little challenging for some. I’ve included information below about the free TanglePatterns grids tutorial download, and as noted on that page Jenna added to our ways of creating this type of grid (reticula) with her Shark Kisses tangle.

Jenna explains how Moonwaves evolved from exploring a Zentangle®-original tangle,

I was playing around the other day with including versions of Crescent Moon in an ogee grid, and the more I played with it — and the farther it got away from looking like Crescent Moon — the more I thought it became a different tangle.

I came up with quite a number of versions I thought looked great, but the one I decided to dub as a new pattern was my favorite, especially when the shading is added.

Jenna illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Moonwaves below where she features it in a colorful ZIA tile, which “also includes a version of Pokeleaf, as well as A-dalfa and some Zingers. Colors are done with Copic markers under colored pencil. The shading on Moonwaves includes both Copic markers and graphite pencil.”
