How to draw WADICAL

Zentangle pattern: Wadical. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. You may use this image for your personal non-commercial reference only. The unauthorized pinning, reproduction or distribution of this copyrighted work is illegal.Wadical is another of the earliest “official” tangle patterns, a Zentangle®-original.

As Maria notes, Wadical adds great texture to any tile.

For my example I placed ribbons (wibbons?) of Wadical back-to-back along a curvy baseline.

An example of Wadical was included on page 47 in the Beginning Zentangle booklet included in the Official Zentangle Kit, but this is the first time Zentangle HQ made a lesson public and published it online in video form.

As part of the Twelve Days of Zentangle, 2018 Edition series, several of these “old” tangles that haven’t been publicly published before are being included in the series. I’m adding each of them to TanglePatterns, so there will be a few more tangles coming your way than usual.

In this Day 3 video beginning at 04:38, Maria demonstrates how to tangle Wadical:

it’s one of our first tangles, you know very, very simple and it’s just a matter of going up and down up and down as a texture. …

I’m going to turn my tile a little bit and do it with a little bit of an angle and again notice the down stroke is a little bit heavier than the up stroke right that again comes from my calligraphic days.

NOTE: For future reference, the video segment for the other tangles tangles included in the “Twelve Days of Zentangle” series can be located on each tangle’s page on TanglePatterns.

Day 3 tangles include Florz, Festune, Wadical and Tripoli.

As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share!

Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. I am so enjoying the twelve Zentangle days to Christmas, mainly because of all the “old” patterns cropping up, some of which I had even forgotten about!

Oh, man, what a difference the “…put down a line, and put down a line, then connect them…” makes in drawing Tripoli! I’ve always had a problem trying to get it to be perfect triangles, but when I worked the pattern this way just now, it came out looking really good!!! 😀
