How to draw SPRIL ’EM

Pittsburgh PA tangler Mary D’Angelo returns today with her Spril ’em tangle. Recently we enjoyed exploring her CaligraV tangle.

Mary is another Zentangle® enthusiast who is heading to Providence this Fall to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher, joining the growing ranks of Pittsburgh-area CZTs.

Mary writes that Spril ’em “was inspired by the radial arms of a piece of crochet that my sister created.

I love using the lazy S stroke and wanted to incorporate it as much as possible.

The name Spril ’em is from my sister Cathy attempting to teach me to crochet. (So not my talent.) She kept saying ‘See, it makes a Spiral! Just keep doing this to them.’ It’s a nice memory of her laughing with me at my struggle to comprehend. She passed away in early September this past year. We were only 11 months apart. I sure miss her.

Spril ’em’s dividing lines have a curvy, radial look that creates the positive/negative spaces.

I’ve included Spril ’em as a monotangle on a triangular tile. The design can be used as a border, in a circle and in a square grid. I chose to add Cadent because it also utilizes the lazy S stroke.”

Whether in a grid, in a triangle, or in the round, Spril ’em is a pretty tangle and an absorbing one to do while keeping the S and backwards-S shapes in the right places.
