Our fun and easy Coofia tangle is a Zentangle®-original first introduced at this Spring’s annual zenAgain CZT-only gathering in April but until now hasn’t been available publicly.
But lucky us, the deconstruction for Maria’s Coofia was released recently in the Zentangle newsletter so we can add it to our resource today.
The name is related to Julie Willand’s new baby daughter as she explains in the newsletter and she also explains for the latest prompt for Zentangle’s 2025 Journal Project:
Coofia is the name that my son gave his baby sister while I was pregnant with her. When we found out I was having a girl, he suggested we name her Coofia and for the next 20 weeks, the name stuck. Back in March, Coofia made her arrival, and now we call her Millie, but the tangle is a sweet reminder of those months of getting to know her before anyone else.
We join with Zentangle in congratulating Julie and her growing family! And we enjoy the addition of Coofia to our collection of now 184 Zentangle-original tangles.
The Zentangle newsletter notes Coofia is “a new chain-like tangle” with tethered auras and in an example feature it embellished with Fescu-ish fronds. It’s not only super easy to tangle but very satisfying too. It can be used as a ribbon/vine through your tile or to frame it with a border.
Maria illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing her Coofia tangle in the Zentangle newsletter here.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Republishing images isn’t allowed. Thanks!

Share your Tangle on TanglePatterns
Have you created a tangle you'd like to share with the community? I'd love to see it.
You do not need to be a CZT to submit a pattern. Many of the tangles on TanglePatterns began as ideas shared by readers just like you.
Before sending your pattern, please take a few minutes to review What Makes a Zentangle® Tangle? and How to Submit Your Pattern Deconstruction to TanglePatterns. These pages on the SUBMIT YOUR PATTERN menu explain what qualifies as a tangle and how to prepare your pattern.
Not every pattern will be selected for publication, but I sincerely appreciate everyone who takes the time to share their creativity and contribute to TanglePatterns.
When you're ready, simply send your pattern by email following the instructions on the submission page.
I look forward to seeing what you've created.

- What Makes a Zentangle tangle? A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle. Patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles, and tangles never start with pencil planning.
