How to draw NATTI

Republishing or redistributing IN ANY FORM including pinning is prohibited under law without express permission.Natti comes to us from Anita Aspfors Westin of Dalarna, Sweden, and it’s her first tangle on the site.

Natti is a nice addition to our collection of woven tangles and it can also be used as a ribbon or border tangle. In her example below, Anita shows how to use it for an overall filler tangle as well.

She writes,

Natti is a pattern inspired by Keeko and Mak-Ra-Mee you might think. And there is some truth in that. But the pattern is mostly inspired from my mothers carpet-weaving when I was a child.

She used a pattern called Rosengång very often but that is too long so I called it Natti. That’s the word we used to say goodnight and when the house was quiet and we children were put in bed she started her weaving.

Natti is one of those tangles that almost requires shading to look its best. In order to get the width “right” for me, after some experimenting (no mistakes) I ended up starting with Step 2 at the top of my space. Then I added the inside and outside strokes of Step 1 and placed the remaining strokes in the middle. I found it was easier to build a consistent “column” that way.

Anita illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Natti below with a suggested variation and she features it in a Zentangle® together with CZT Kate Ahrens’s Tropicana and a triangular version of the Zentangle-original Ambler/Emingle.
