Schiefer translates from the German to “shale” in English, and it’s a perfect name for German tangler Simone Bischoff’s tangle.
Almost exactly a year ago Simone shared her wonderfully helpful tutorial, “Sharpen your line drawing skills with six easy lessons from Simone Bischoff” on TanglePatterns. You can find this and many other inspirational tutorials by clicking on the TUTORIALS tab in the pink alphabetic tangle menu bar. Simone also has several lovely tangles on the site which can be located under simoneb in the TANGLES BY ARTIST section in the left sidebar.
Sometimes you just want a really bold tangle for your Zentangle tile and Schiefer can be that tangle.
From Wikipedia we learn,
Shale is a fine-grained, clastic sedimentary rock composed of mud that is a mix of flakes of clay minerals and tiny fragments (silt-sized particles) of other minerals, especially quartz and calcite. The ratio of clay to other minerals is variable. Shale is characterized by breaks along thin laminae or parallel layering or bedding less than one centimeter in thickness.
Schiefer does require focus to keep the triangle points aligned, but then you could also come up with a cool version by gradually changing their size and letting each “column” wander a bit … It helped me to draw this one “upside down”.
Simone illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Schiefer here on her blog, together with variations. As Simone comments, Schiefer lends itself to several nice ones.
Check out the tag simoneb for more of Simone’s tangles on TanglePatterns.com.

“Schiefer” normally translates to slate and is used a lot for roof tiles.
Oh my, does this mean Google doesn’t know everything?! Thanks, Faith.
