How to draw TEST PATTERN

Zentangle pattern: Test Pattern. Image © Linda Farmer and TanglePatterns.com. All rights reserved.Test Pattern is tangle from Ohio CZT Cynthia Gannon who’s also shared her Chi tangle with us. While it looks complicated, Test Pattern is very simple when constructed methodically and with deliberate strokes.

Test Pattern is based on a grid with a half-drop in the pattern. This type of pattern repeats the motif by staggering the pattern horizontally or vertically and is one of the most commonly used pattern repeats in fabric and wallpaper design.

Cynthia writes,

It started out reminding me of a pattern from the 1960s but ended up reminding me of the test patterns that would be on the TV screen (in the 1950s and 60s) when that specific channel went off the air! [I’m sure many tanglers have no idea what that is!! 🙂 ]”

Just to show there’s no right side up in tangles and Zentangle®, I’ve turned my example 90°. I also added another set of solid triangles at the joining tips of the large diamonds in Cynthia’s original design.

Cynthia illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Test Pattern below and in the second image Cynthia shows it with what she terms “open” and “closed” variations for Step 6.
