How to draw FARLING

Zentangle pattern: FarlingWell dear friends and neighbors, we’ve reached that transitional long weekend of the year in North America: Labor (Labour) Day.

Back to school, college football starting with a full slate of games, Fall just around the corner, Summer waning and the days are already getting shorter. Labor Day also marks the height of the hurricane season here in the Sunshine State. Excitement and trepidation all at once!

Each day as I’m selecting the tangle patterns to add to our index, I try to vary the type of tangle, the relative degree of difficulty, and I’m mindful of the wide range of ages, interests, and of course gender preferences. I’m conscious of making sure to include tangles I think will appeal to the many male tanglers in the Zentangle® community for whom the more “feminine” tangles won’t always appeal.

Farling is a grid-based tangle pattern from Boise, Idaho, CZT Deb Eichhorn, and its “structural” architectural feel seems to me to lean towards the “masculine” type of tangles.

This is Deb’s first tangle on the site, and she tells us about how she became hooked on Zentangle and how Farling came to be.

I live next door to Jana Pharmer, CZT 10. After she went to the training, I was her first student. I have always been envious of those that have artistic talents, and I was amazed when I was able to do this! I coined Zentangle as “Art for the rest of ‘us’”. When Jana had classes, I would be her dutiful assistant … performing tasks like collecting erasers at the door and rapping peoples’ knuckles if they called it doodling. (I could be making that part up.) I decided that I really wanted to become certified, so Jana went AGAIN with me to the CZT XV class this past June. We had a blast.

At work, I always have the prettiest agendas by time the meeting is completed. Farling was birthed at one of those meetings. It is a combination of words … It is Darling and then the F word … you know … FABULOUS!

Farling begins with a channel grid that’s drawn with the Hollibaugh technique of “drawing behind”. Farling can be varied in several ways by changing the placement and type of fill you choose. I love how it has a layered look of depth to it.

Here Deb illustrates the steps for drawing Farling and demonstrates it in a monotangle Zentangle.
