If you’ve been here with me for any length of time you’ll know Robert and I are registered armchair sports fans. Whether it’s NBA basketball, college football, NFL football, or most of the golf major tournaments, we’re there enjoying the athletes and the competition.
Now that the NBA playoffs – some three months long– are finally over with a hard-fought successful conclusion for the Miami Heat and I’m emerging slowly from basketball-withdrawal, another one of our favorite spectator sports starts tomorrow — professional cycling’s prestigious Tour de France stage race.
I know I’ve said it before but at the risk of repeating myself, what can be better than spending three weeks traveling through the gorgeous scenery of France from the comfort of your sofa. And now with HDTV, the views are all the more spectacular.
The history and geography tidbits from legendary cycling commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are always fascinating. And the cycling is pretty exciting too. Team competition, individual competition, races within races – it’s compelling entertainment every summer.
“Running from Saturday June 29th to Sunday July 21th 2013, the 100th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,404 kilometres.” That’s 2,115 miles of racing folks. On bicycles. Up and down some very serious mountains. Here’s a graphic of this year’s route. This year the Grand Départ (the race start) takes place on the island of Corsica so I’m looking forward to seeing some wonderful new vistas right from the get-go.
Tomorrow morning Robert and I are kicking off the next three weeks in style at 7:30 am ET with croissants from a local French bakery and our home-made café au lait.
This annual date with the television also provides lots of relaxing tangling time and I’m really looking forward to that too!
