I find myself coming up with tangle patterns based on a grid – it seems once you get started on a theme, one pattern leads to another.
The first pattern I created was Zin, and that was the start of my so-called “wine series” of Zentangle patterns. This one I named Chard for Chardonnay (pronounced “shard”, it’s wine not the vegetable!). I’m sure Cab, Merlot, and Gewurtz won’t be far behind.
After you draw the initial grid and diagonals, if you draw all the strokes going in one direction first then you can turn your tile and draw the remaining strokes to meet up in the middle. I find it helps divide the space more evenly with my strokes if I place the center one first as I did in the first grid box in step 3. Then I eyeball the space either side of that to make the strokes dividing the remaining space. Chard really comes into its own when you shade the center diagonal area giving it the 3D effect.
Here are the step-by-step instructions for drawing my Zentangle® pattern, Chard. Enjoy!

I am a beginner-is there a reason why square number 5 is blank?
Thanks!
Hi Ethel, thanks for visiting tanglepatterns – and welcome to “the club”!
To answer your question – I like to put the finished pattern in the last step and since this one doesn’t take all 6 steps to create it, I just skipped #5. The reason I put the finished pattern in the last step is that when I flip through my Moleskine notebook of pattern instructions, the finished pattern is always in the same position making it easier to scan through them. Many patterns only take 3 or 4 steps, but others do take all 6. I sometimes use blank squares to record variations.
I hope you visited the “Organize Your Patterns” page – there are lots of great suggestions in the comments. Enjoy!
Again…. a lovely one! Keep creating… and I’m crazy about tanglepatterns.com! So much inspiration!
Thanks Ellen!
Another fantastic tangle! I’m going to love your wine series, no doubt about it. I’ve used it in two zens so far. That’s pretty good but I haven’t been able to do many lately!

Nice, Sandra! Thanks for sharing your creations and the links. Most appreciated.
I know this is not a new tangle, but I have just found it, love it.
Great pattern, and exquisite shading!!
Tranks for this wonderfull Website, i’m living in Switzerland, where we have no CZT’s Änderungen so i Love to find all these Patterns here!
Well done Linda awesome pattern can’t what to draw it
Recently I discovered Chard, it is a very nice pattern, I like it!
I’ve just finished drawing Chard, and I love it. It really does take your attention to draw it correctly but when you give it that attention, the reward makes it totally worth it! As a new tangler, I got the idea of Zentangle being a meditation fairly quickly, but after drawing Chard, I “got” the idea viscerally, rather than just mentally. Thank you so much for sharing your work.
Thank you for this pattern, Linda. I like how it feels to draw this one. It’s funny, I’ve been Tangling for 3 years now, and I am really appreciating all the nice straightforward tangles, and yours is no exception. It’s so nice and simple, but also looks great. And thanks again for your site. I wounder if I would have stayed with Zentangle without all the wonderful information, tangles and help that it gives me. You are a special person!
this was really fun to make i enjoyed it
