This is a tangle pattern by CZT® Suzanne McNeill. Black Box can be used as a border design as well as a filler for your string. Variants that occur to me include changing the dimensions and proportions of the boxes, and leaving the larger squares as outlines rather than filled. Ditto for the small squares.
