How to draw SQUARES

Squares is a tangle pattern I find challenging to draw without penciled guidelines – and even then I end up outside the lines! Gives it some character, no?  For variations I suppose you could use circles, or diamonds, or triangles, or ???  in place of the squares. And/or omit the solid fills.
