Hello my friends and Happy Friday, Happy Weekend, and Happy Mother’s Day this Sunday!
Today’s cool (and easy!) Hammersmith tangle is from UK CZT Lucy Farran and it’s her ninth on the site. Most recently we explored her Kyta tangle and you can learn more about Lucy and where she’s from on the page for her Trix tangle.
Lucy explains her Hammersmith inspiration,
The tangle is based on a Moquette design. Moquette is the hardwearing material that is used to upholster the seats on London Transport vehicles (buses, underground trains and trams).
My son is a big fan of trains and London transport in general and so I receive regular emails from the London Transport Museum. Recently they sent me through some really interesting information on Moquette design.
I spent a happy hour gazing at all the different samples they have in their collection online and a few struck me as the basis of some fun tangles. This one is based on a design used on Hammersmith & City line O-stock cars, circa 1935. I have named the tangle Hammersmith based on this.
I developed the tangle as a border tangle, but it can also be expanded to fill a space, as shown at the bottom of the step out.
The grey tile example shows Hammersmith in border form as a fill for Hollibaugh. Each one with slightly different shading or colouring, to demonstrate some options.
The tan tile shows Hammersmith drawn to fill a space (first version at the bottom of the step-out) and a different border idea based on this.
The black tile shows Hammersmith filling a space in a different way, the tile includes Tipple and Crazy ‘Nzeppel.
Lucy illustrates the step-by-step instructions for drawing Hammersmith below and shows us several cool ways to embellish and explore her tangle.
As you enjoy any of the tangles on the site, please leave a comment of thanks and encouragement to show the artists you appreciate them for sharing their creativity to inspire yours. Your thanks helps motivate them to continue to share! And please share a link to your favorite tangles on social media. Thanks!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful Moms and Moms-to-be, and especially to my amazing Mom!
BTW- If you’re making greeting cards for Mother’s Day, check out CZT Jane Eileen Malone’s 4Mom tangle, and of course any of the heart tangles. Another thought, Zenspirations creator Joanne Fink has a free video tutorial on making easy and elegant handmade greeting cards here on the site.
Have a beautiful weekend and we’ll see you back here again on Monday with another fun tangle to explore.

- "A Zentangle has no up or down and is not a picture of something, so you have no worries about whether you can draw a hand, or a duck. You always succeed in creating a Zentangle." Thus patterns that are drawings of a recognizable naturalistic or actual object, figure, or scene, are not tangles. A pattern is not always a tangle — here's what makes a tangle. Nice ribbon with alternating directions and interesting decoration possibilities. Great variations to fill spaces. Good!
Thanks Tomas, I’m glad you like it!
